In conjunction with special education services, there are related services that may or may not be necessary. The determination of need for these services is made by the IEP team after a student is determined eligible for services. Related services may include:
While it is possible for a student to be on a Speech only IEP, this may also be a related service in conjunction with other special education services.. Speech services may address language, articulation, or other communciation related concerns.
Occupational Therapy (OT):
This service is provided as part of an IEP and is not a qualifying area by itself. Occupational Therapy focuses on improving the fine motor skills required to be successful within the school environment.
Physical Therapy (PT):
Like OT, this service can only be provided as part of an IEP, and is not, in of itself, a qualifying area. Physical Therapy focuses on improving the gross motor skills required to be successful within the school environment.
Some disabilities restrict the transportation options of a student. In these cases, the team may decide that including specialized transportation requirements be included in an IEP.
