Sandites BMX Team Honored by Two-Time Olympian Nic Long
The Sandites BMX Team received an unforgettable surprise during a recent celebration, as two-time Olympian and professional BMX racer Nic Long visited Sand Springs to recognize the accomplishments of the Oklahoma Interscholastic BMX League and its standout riders.
Long, who represented Team USA in the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympic Games, brought high energy and heartfelt admiration to the event. While he’s competed on some of the world’s biggest stages, Long told the crowd that days like this—celebrating young athletes and the growth of BMX at the school level—are among his favorite moments.
Celebrating the Team
Long highlighted the dedication and resilience required to succeed in BMX racing. He recognized every member of the Sandites BMX Team for their commitment to attending practices, supporting one another, and representing Sand Springs Public Schools with sportsmanship and pride.
According to Long, the team has set a strong example for school-based BMX programs statewide through their determination, teamwork, and passion for the sport.
Spotlight on Parker Hinkle
One of the evening’s highlights was the recognition of Parker Hinkle, who recently represented Sand Springs—and the entire state of Oklahoma—against riders from eight different states. Hinkle delivered an exceptional performance, ultimately winning Gold Cup #1 and earning his place among the top young riders in the region.
State Champion Travis Maxwell Recognized
Long also honored Travis Maxwell, praising him as a leader both on and off the track. Maxwell was celebrated for his focus, discipline, and respectful approach to competition—qualities that helped him secure the title of Oklahoma Interscholastic BMX League State Champion.
A Message to All Students
Long closed the event with an inspirational message, reminding students that success isn’t defined solely by winning—it's built through consistency, perseverance, and effort. He praised the Sandites BMX Team for demonstrating those values week after week, both in training and in competition.
He encouraged students to continue chasing their goals, supporting one another, and representing their community with integrity—whether on the track, in school, or in life.
Looking Ahead
The celebration concluded with enthusiastic applause for the entire Sandites BMX Team, as well as special honorees Parker Hinkle and State Champion Travis Maxwell. Long expressed pride in the athletes’ achievements and hinted that he hopes to see some of them at the starting gate in the future.
