SAND SPRINGS, Okla. -
A Sand Springs school bus made an unexpected stop Wednesday afternoon when the driver suffered a medical emergency. Thanks to the quick actions of a 9-year-old student on board, everyone got the help they needed.
Kane’s Quick Actions
Nine-year-old Kane Lee typically sits in his seat while talking to friends or playing on his phone during his bus ride home. When his bus driver pulled over, he walked to the front of the bus and saw immediately that something was wrong.
“She couldn’t talk, and I could tell by her face and stuff that she needed me to call someone. So I called 911,” Lee said.
Even though he was scared, he stayed calm and stayed with her the entire time.
“I didn’t want her to, like, pass out when I went back to my seat,” he said.
Keeping Other Students Calm
Kane didn’t just call for help—he helped keep other students calm as well.
“Little kids were scared, so I gave them hugs,” he said. “Some of my other friends was quieting people down.”
District Response
Sand Springs Public Schools said all students remained safe, and a replacement driver arrived to finish the route. The district has not disclosed details about the driver’s condition, but says a message was sent to parents explaining the emergency and thanking everyone who acted quickly. Leaders praised the students’ calm response and highlighted Kane’s bravery.
“I just felt good that I could help,” Kane said.
What’s Next
Kane will be recognized at school Friday morning for his quick thinking and courage during the emergency.
