Coach Kizzar’s U.S. Government class turned their classroom into the Supreme Court this week! Students stepped into history by re-enacting the landmark 1989 case Texas v. Johnson—where the Court ruled that burning the U.S. flag is a form of symbolic speech protected under the First Amendment.
Five students served as justices while the rest represented Gregory Lee Johnson and the State of Texas. After hearing arguments and fielding questions, the student Supreme Court reached its own verdict—then compared it to the real one. Talk about hands-on government in action!
Did You Know?
The real case was decided 5–4 in favor of Johnson!
