Garfield STEAM Academy Recognized as Distinguished School

We are excited to announce that Garfield STEAM Academy has been recognized as a Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished District for providing broad access to transformative learning opportunities for students through its PLTW programs. PLTW is a nonprofit organization that serves millions of PreK-12 students and teachers in schools across the U.S.

“PLTW provides students a connection between science, engineering and math as well combining literacy in a way that helps them connect with the content,” said Shawn Beard, SSPS Executive Director of Curriculum.

The PLTW recognition honors schools committed to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. To be eligible for the designation, Garfield STEAM Academy had to have had 20 percent or more of its students in each grade, PreK-5, participate in a PLTW program during the 2018-19 school year.

Through PLTW programs, students develop in-demand knowledge and skills that they will use both in school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take. As PLTW students progress through grades PreK-12, they are empowered to engage in problem-solving and process thinking, develop technical knowledge and skills, build communication skills, and explore career opportunities.

Garfield STEAM Academy offers PLTW Launch (PreK-5).

“It is a great honor to recognize Garfield STEAM Academy for their commitment to providing students with an excellent educational experience,” said Dr. Vince Bertram, President and CEO of PLTW. “They should be very proud of their work to ensure students have the knowledge and skills to be career ready and successful on any career path they choose.”

Garfield STEAM Academy is part of a community of PreK-12 schools, colleges and universities, and corporate and philanthropic partners across the country united around a passion for providing students with inspiring, engaging, and empowering learning opportunities.
