Six Sand Springs Public Schools staff members pose in costumes inspired by the movie Inside Out and other characters. The image includes the text “Wishing you a #SanditeSafe Halloween” with the Sand Springs Sandites logo in the corner.

Sand Springs Public Schools wants all Sandite families to be #SanditeSafe this Halloween! Check out our trick-or-treating safety tips below.

Halloween Safety Tips

1. Stick Together

Always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds. Don’t trick or treat alone. It’s safer (and more fun) to go together in a group. Kids should stick to familiar houses and neighborhoods they know.

2. Make a Plan

If your older children are trick-or-treating alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home and get flashlights with batteries for everyone.

3. Stay Alert

Talk with kids about the risk of distracted walking. This includes text messaging, talking on or looking at their mobile phone, and listening to music. Keep your head up, be alert, and watch for cars.

4. Stay in Safe Zones

Walk on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic. Only go to homes with a porch light on and, ideally, a well-lit pathway.

5. Stay Outside

Make sure kids never enter a home or car for a treat. Notify law enforcement authorities immediately about any suspicious or unlawful activity.

6. Be 911 Ready

Review with your child how to call 9-1-1 if they ever have an emergency, get lost or are prone to wander.

7. Be Visible

Put reflective tape or stickers on costumes, shoes, candy bags, strollers, or wagons. Glow sticks and flashlights are another great way to improve visibility while trick-or-treating.

8. Save Sweets for Home

Wait until children are home to sort and check treats before eating them.

9. Going to the Game? Review Safety Measures

Tonight's game against Putnam City North falls on Halloween night, and we know many of our fans may join us in costume to celebrate! We’re excited to see everyone’s spirit and creativity, but we also want to make sure the evening is safe and enjoyable for all attendees.
