SSPS Students Race through the new Angus Valley Elementary Gymnasium

This week, the Sand Springs community got its first look at the new Angus Valley Elementary gymnasium. Sand Springs Public Schools (SSPS) held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the gym on August 12 to kick off back-to-school night. In addition to housing physical education activities, the building will serve as storm protection.

Angus Valley Elementary Principal Angela Hobson says the gymnasium will give students a large space to exercise while giving parents peace of mind. “We know that Oklahoma is no stranger to severe weather,” says Hobson, “so we are thankful to have this safe place on campus to take shelter during storms.”

The new gymnasium was designed by KKT Architects and constructed by LDKerns Contractors. The building is part of a $32.85 million bond passed by Sand Springs voters in March 2019. That bond package also included funds for the Freshman Academy and STEM Center, which finished construction in August 2020.

“We are thrilled at the progress being made here at Sand Springs Public Schools,” says Supt. Sherry Durkee. “This gymnasium reflects the growth and support of the community, and we are incredibly grateful to the voters who made this project possible.”
